Prediction of the rock behaviour specifically sudden failure is essential in a wide range of engineering problems specially in deep mining and underground excavations. Rocks around underground excavations at great depth, on one hand, experiences high geo-stress and stress redistribution and on the other hand, excavation acts as removing one of the confining stresses. Consequently, rock behaviour changes due to unloading (excavation) and stress changes due to redistribution. In deep and high-stress underground condition in hard rocks, this causes a sudden or violent failure which damage mine infrastructure and even casualties. In this presentation, rock behaviour is discussed in micro- , Meso-, and macro- scales. |
